Claude 17492ae250 Setup Podman and Podman Compose for local development
Add comprehensive Podman configuration for local development:

- docker-compose.yml: Main compose file with all services (PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, API, Frontend)
- docker-compose.dev.yml: Development-specific overrides with hot-reload
- Dockerfile.api: Backend API service Dockerfile
- Dockerfile.frontend: Frontend Next.js service Dockerfile
- Updated Dockerfile: Podman-compatible production build with better layer caching
- .env.example: Environment variable template
- .dockerignore: Exclude unnecessary files from builds
- Makefile: Convenient commands for common Podman operations
- scripts/db/: Database initialization scripts directory
- Updated README.md: Comprehensive Podman setup and usage documentation

Features:
- Rootless Podman support with SELinux compatibility
- Development mode with volume mounts for hot-reload
- Health checks for service dependencies
- Proper build stage optimization
- All services networked together

- **GraphQL**: API query language for flexible and efficient data fetching.
- **Express.js**: Fast, unopinionated web framework for Node.js, powering the backend API.
- **PostgreSQL**: Relational database for persistent storage.
- **Docker**: Containerization for consistent deployment.
- **Podman & Podman Compose**: Container orchestration for local development and deployment.
- **Terraform CDKTF**: Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using the Cloud Development Kit for Terraform.
- **RabbitMQ**: Message broker for asynchronous communication and background processing.
## Docker Commands
## Prerequisites
To build the Docker image:
- **Podman**: Install from [podman.io](https://podman.io/getting-started/installation)
- **Podman Compose**: Install via `pip install podman-compose`
- **Node.js**: Version 22.17.0 or higher
- **pnpm**: Package manager (installed via corepack)
## Local Development with Podman
### Quick Start
1. **Clone the repository**
```sh
git clone <repository-url>
cd lightsaver
```
2. **Set up environment variables**
```sh
cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env with your configuration if needed
```
3. **Start all services with Podman Compose**
```sh
# Development mode with hot-reload
podman-compose -f docker-compose.yml -f docker-compose.dev.yml up
# Or use the base configuration only
podman-compose up
```
4. **Access the applications**
- Frontend: http://localhost:3000
- Backend API: http://localhost:4000
- RabbitMQ Management: http://localhost:15672 (user: lightsaver, password: lightsaver_dev)
- PostgreSQL: localhost:5432
### Available Podman Commands
**Start services in detached mode:**
```sh
docker build -t lightsaver-app .
podman-compose up -d
```
To run the container:
**Stop services:**
```sh
docker run -p 3000:3000 lightsaver-app
```
podman-compose down
```
**Stop services and remove volumes:**
```sh
podman-compose down -v
```
**View logs:**
```sh
# All services
podman-compose logs -f
# Specific service
podman-compose logs -f frontend
podman-compose logs -f api
```
**Rebuild services:**
```sh
podman-compose build
podman-compose up --build
```
**Run commands in a service container:**
```sh
# Frontend
podman-compose exec frontend pnpm install
podman-compose exec frontend pnpm build
# API
podman-compose exec api pnpm install
```
### Production Build
Build the production image:
```sh
podman build -t lightsaver-app .
```
Run the production container:
```sh
podman run -p 3000:3000 lightsaver-app
```
### Service Architecture
The project uses the following services:
- **frontend**: Next.js application (port 3000)
- **api**: Express + GraphQL API (port 4000)
- **postgres**: PostgreSQL database (port 5432)
- **rabbitmq**: RabbitMQ message broker (ports 5672, 15672)
### Troubleshooting
**Port conflicts:**
If ports are already in use, modify the port mappings in `docker-compose.yml`.
**Permission issues with volumes:**
Podman runs rootless by default. Add `:z` or `:Z` to volume mounts if you encounter permission issues.
**SELinux issues:**
The dev compose file includes `:z` flags for volume mounts to handle SELinux contexts.
**Container doesn't start:**
Check logs with `podman-compose logs <service-name>` to diagnose issues.
You must specify POSTGRES_PASSWORD to a non-empty value for the
You may also use "POSTGRES_HOST_AUTH_METHOD=trust" to allow all
WARNING: POSTGRES_HOST_AUTH_METHOD has been set to "trust". This will allow
anyone with access to the Postgres port to access your database without
a password, even if POSTGRES_PASSWORD is set. See PostgreSQL
documentation about "trust":
https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/auth-trust.html
In Docker's default configuration, this is effectively any other
container on the same system.
It is not recommended to use POSTGRES_HOST_AUTH_METHOD=trust. Replace
it with "-e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=password" instead to set a password in
"docker run".
Error: in 18+, these Docker images are configured to store database data in a
format which is compatible with "pg_ctlcluster" (specifically, using
major-version-specific directory names). This better reflects how
PostgreSQL itself works, and how upgrades are to be performed.
See also https://github.com/docker-library/postgres/pull/1259
Counter to that, there appears to be PostgreSQL data in:
${OLD_DATABASES[*]}
This is usually the result of upgrading the Docker image without upgrading
the underlying database using "pg_upgrade" (which requires both versions).
See https://github.com/docker-library/postgres/issues/37 for a (long)
discussion around this process, and suggestions for how to do so.
# Database Initialization Scripts
SQL scripts in this directory are automatically executed when the PostgreSQL container is first initialized.
## Usage
- Scripts are executed in alphabetical order
- Use numbered prefixes (01-, 02-, etc.) to control execution order
- Place schema definitions in early scripts
- Place seed data in later scripts
## Example
- `01-init.sql` - Create extensions and initial schema
- `02-seed.sql` - Insert initial data
- `03-indexes.sql` - Create indexes
## Notes
- These scripts only run on first container creation
- To re-run, you must remove the postgres volume: `make clean` or `podman-compose down -v`
# Auth Service
This service handles user authentication and authorization using Ory Kratos and integrates with a REST API.
## Technologies Used
- **Ory Kratos (self-hosted)**: Identity and user management system.
- **Express.js**: Web framework for building the REST API.
- **PostgreSQL**: Database for storing user data.
- **Docker**: Kratos, PostgreSQL, and this service are containerized for easy deployment.
Kratos was chosen for its robust identity management capabilities, including support for multiple authentication methods and self-service flows. It also provides first class support for PostgreSQL, which was my preferred database choice for this project.
# We set the default STOPSIGNAL to SIGINT, which corresponds to what PostgreSQL
# calls "Fast Shutdown mode" wherein new connections are disallowed and any
# in-progress transactions are aborted, allowing PostgreSQL to stop cleanly and
# flush tables to disk.
#
# See https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/server-shutdown.html for more details
# about available PostgreSQL server shutdown signals.
#
# See also https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/server-start.html for further
# justification of this as the default value, namely that the example (and
# shipped) systemd service files use the "Fast Shutdown mode" for service
# termination.
#
STOPSIGNAL SIGINT
#
# An additional setting that is recommended for all users regardless of this
# value is the runtime "--stop-timeout" (or your orchestrator/runtime's
# equivalent) for controlling how long to wait between sending the defined
# STOPSIGNAL and sending SIGKILL.
#
# The default in most runtimes (such as Docker) is 10 seconds, and the
# documentation at https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/server-start.html notes
# that even 90 seconds may not be long enough in many instances.
